Creating Meaningful and Original Artwork
The M5 students created meaningful and original artwork on migration. Here are two excerpts:
Whilst working on this project, I discovered the various painful histories of migrants. It motivated me to create a piece of work to show expressions of deep mental problems that migrants have faced…..I worked with Adobe Photoshop to create this digital collage. In terms of developing technique I looked at some exceptional collage techniques by the artist, Richard Hamilton. The explanation of the artwork: The groups of people outside the iron wire are in the process of migrating. They are facing infinitive and enormous emotional waves. The birds are creatures who migrate seasonally in order to find the most suitable ecological conditions for feeding, breeding, and raising their young. I wanted to portray birds as they too go through complex steps to discover a stable place for them to live in. The iron wire that separates the connection between the foreground and the middle ground conveys a true-to-life dark message that migrants cannot easily go back to their home country, even if they are struggling to survive and they feel stuck in an unfamiliar place. There are various forms of hands striving to come outside of the wire, however, they are gradually fading into black and white when interacting with the people inside. The extending hands are of regret, pain and a request for help. Tae Hui Kim, M5 My work is metaphorical. In this piece, I attempted to depict the various emotions one faces whilst migrating. In the top half of the picture, there is a sparrow-man leaving his sparrow-partner with their eggs in the nest. When people migrate they might leave important parts of their lives behind.
I used a bright green pattern for the top half and for a small fraction of the bottom part to show that the sparrow-man is different from everyone else in his new environment. Even though the sparrow-man has migrated, the hard part is not over as the hauntings of his past follow him no matter where he goes. For the most part, which is the bottom half of my artwork, I used a dull grey pattern to contrast with the green above to show how different it is for the sparrow-man whilst migrating. The people in the grey new environment are depicted as snake-people. Not everyone is kind to migrants and can make them feel very uncomfortable..I chose a snake because they are the sparrows’ biggest predators.I wanted to depict the danger of migrating to a whole different society. Arya, M5 Ranmali Hapugalle Visual Art Language Acquisition
The language acquisition department has had a strong start this year. To begin with, the French students from M1 to M4 have been working on emotional intelligence and the importance of having a regular and healthy routine. The M5 French students have been examining how having a shared language can be an important point of unity and cooperation amongst different countries.
The D2 students have been questioning whether or not modern communication devices are being used in the best possible way. They have been questioning whether we have become too dependent on our phones.
The Hindi students have presented their views on the lifestyles of some of the people in their lives like soldiers, teachers, students, software engineers and domestic helpers. They looked at the inherent value in all of these people and examined the special challenges faced by them.
Our new Chinese teacher, Ms. Yan Chen, was warmly welcomed by our students and all agree that she is an outstanding addition to our faculty.
The M1and M2 students have been focusing on the impact of culture on our day to day lives. They recognize that while there are certainly some universals across all populations, our home culture has a big impact on how we conduct ourselves on a daily basis. In contrast, the M3 and M4 students have been taking a careful look at interpersonal relationships outside of the home and what is needed to have healthy interactions with friends and classmates. Moving up to the Diploma level, the D1 students have been focusing on Chinese traditional stories. The D2 students have been looking at how relationships with others affect individual development. The M5 students have worked on a variety of topics, but one that really stands out is how the physical design of a home can impact the happiness of its inhabitants. In Spanish, all of Ms. Lina’s groups have been doing outstanding work. Here are excerpts from a couple of grades.
The M5 students have been discussing and contrasting different aspects of their own culture with that of Spanish-speaking countries. They shared a bit of the history and reasons why they love the cuisine that they feel best represents their own cultures.
Despite being beginners, the D1 ab initio students recently recited dialogues. This is amazing that within just three weeks of instruction, they are able to engage in simple conversations!
The D2 Spanish B students have been discussing the positive and negative aspects of technology and social media. This is being done in connection with a book that they read over the summer called “Y luego ganas tu”. They are looking forward to a formal debate soon!
