Child Protection Workshop for Parents
Thank you to those who attended the workshop last Wednesday. We had lots of positive feedback from the attendees. Our grading system - SOLO Taxonomy - with a Stonehill twist! The Primary Team have agreed on SOLO Taxonomy as a grading tool for learners, teachers and families. This is a tool that can be made accessible to all members of the community. As you know, we are conceptual-based, hence, we will give SOLO a “Stonehill twist”. “Good grading systems identify the purposes and intentions of grades. They engage students as copilots in the learning process, allowing them to take ownership over the processes and products of learning. They avoid grading student effort or other behavioural characteristics of students that distract from a focus on learning and that can lead to inequitable outcomes. They provide reassessment opportunities so that students can continually show their improvement. Finally, they keep at their centre a focus on reporting learning so that little confusion exists about how a student got a particular grade or how they can improve it.” (Nordengren, C. 2021) Here is some information to help you begin to understand the SOLO grading system Solo Taxonomy A learner example from Seisen International School: The PYP Exhibition
The Primary Team has started a discussion about our PYP Exhibition - the culminating inquiry of the programme. We want it to have a unique structure and feel. We want it to be innovative, supporting globally significant issues whilst enabling learners to tap into their passions. Should you have some thoughts in this regard, please drop me an email. I am more than happy to include your ideas in our discussion. [email protected] Toddle We are still ironing out some of the initial bugs in Toddle - the most being our transition from one learning platform to another. We do have some parents who are willing to help others struggling, should you wish. Please get in touch with me, if you would like to have a buddy in your learning journey. [email protected] Tutor training We are very aware that some families have hired a tutor to help their child/en with remote and distance learning. We would like to offer your tutor some support as our processes are quite different from other schools. Should you wish to sign your tutor up for sessions, please let me know. As soon as we have names, we will begin sessions. [email protected] Being a conceptual learner The PYP is a three-dimensional programme. We teach skills, knowledge and concepts. Many traditional programmes teach just skills and knowledge. Adding the third dimension of concepts really bolsters the learner's abilities. It allows them to interrogate big ideas and transfer those ideas into other situations as they understand how to connect the skills and knowledge to their learning. Conceptual learners have so much more to offer. They have so many more tools in their tool box, if you like. The Arts Festival The Arts Festival will begin on the 27th September and last over the week. The online festival will have a similar structure to our other “weeks” - Discovery Week (quarter two) and the Literacy Festival (quarter three). One of our focuses this year is to embed our host culture into our units of inquiry and into our special weeks. The Arts Festival is the perfect way to start our year with many opportunities for inclusion. Please look out for further information through Toddle. Have a lovely fortnight, Karen Crooke Primary School Principal |
